Growing up in Landenberg and graduating from Avon Grove High School, Dr. Laura Johnson always knew her future would revolve around animals. From her very first volunteer hours at local clinics in high school to years spent working hands-on as a veterinary technician, her passion never wavered. That dedication led her to earn her VMD from the University of Pennsylvania.
After more than 25 years in the field, Dr. Johnson opened Cypress Vet Clinic in Kennett Square in the Spring of 2022—a place built on compassion, community, and truly personalized care. Today, her mission is simple: to treat every pet like family, and every client like a neighbor.
From a young age, Dr. Johnson knew she wanted to be a veterinarian. Animals weren’t just pets—they have always been a part of the family. Her first pet, a cat named Blackstar (after the 1980s cartoon), joined the family when she was just four. Over the years, her life has been filled with memorable companions with equally memorable names: Cleo (short for Cleopatra), Gidget (from the TV show), Taz (short for Tasmanian Devil), and her current dog, Bex (named after the character from Ted Lasso) just to name a few.
One significant moment came during Laura’s teenage years when her family’s beloved yellow Lab, Taz, was diagnosed with lymphoma at just three years old. Taz had been her constant companion on walks through White Clay Creek. The way the veterinarian delivered the devastating news left a lasting impression on Dr. Johnson in her teenage years—not just because of the diagnosis, but because of the way it was communicated. Taz went on to live until 14 years old and that experience helped shape the empathetic, and heartfelt way she now speaks with her own clients during difficult times.
Encouraged by her mother to pursue her dreams, Dr. Johnson earned her Bachelor of Science degree with a pre-vet concentration from the University of Delaware. In 2001, she then went on to continue her studies at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine.
Over the years, Dr. Johnson worked in a fast-paced 24-hour general practice, juggling daytime appointments with overnight hospital shifts. The demanding schedule sharpened her clinical skills and gave her invaluable experience. She also credits her growth to several mentors. One taught her that the emotional side of veterinary care is just as critical as the medicine. Another approached medicine like a puzzle and brought enthusiasm to even the most challenging cases. “That mindset stuck with me,” Dr. Johnson says. “I love the challenge of figuring out what’s going on and how we can help.”
In just three years, Cypress Vet Clinic has experienced remarkable growth. The clinic originally operated only three days a week but quickly built a strong client base and is now open five days a week. Most recently, Dr. Johnson welcomed Dr. Jill Hammill to the team. Dr. Hammill specializes in exotic animals, including rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, sugar gliders, reptiles, amphibians, pet pigs, chickens, ducks, geese, and guinea hens.
Dr. Laura Johnson thoughtfully designed the clinic’s environment with pets in mind. The space is of course intended to provide comfort for the animals during their visit, helping them feel more at ease. The staff emphasizes that it’s okay for pups to sit on the furniture. Adding a personal touch, Dr. Johnson hand-selected the playful wallpaper prints in each of the 5 exam rooms, creating a modern, welcoming atmosphere for both pets and their owners.
As Cypress celebrates it’s third anniversary, you can find Dr. Johnson at Third Thursday on May 15th, where she’ll be offering care and bandaging for your stuffed animal friends—a fun and heartfelt way to connect with the community.
