Alex & Caroline Pollock

In the heart of Kennett Square, Pollock Music has become a cornerstone for aspiring musicians of all ages. Founded by husband-and-wife duo Alex and Caroline Pollock, the studio offers personalized music instruction in a welcoming, community-focused environment right on Union Street.

Alex Pollock

Both Alex and Caroline grew up surrounded by music in South Jersey. Alex started piano lessons in first grade with a local teacher and later picked up guitar in elementary school. Alex grew up listening to classic rock thanks to his dad’s career in radio, finding early inspiration in artists like Led Zeppelin. He was inspired by Robby Krieger, the legendary guitarist and songwriter for The Doors, Alex was especially drawn to his unique fingerstyle technique, expressive slide guitar work, and flamenco influences heard on iconic hits like Light My Fire. That blend of technical skill and creativity continues to shape his approach to both playing and teaching.

Caroline Pollock

Caroline’s musical journey began with piano lessons in kindergarten, followed by flute in the school band and singing in choir. She grew up listening to artists like Matchbox Twenty, Dave Matthews Band, and Tom Petty. In High School she discovered guitar, which quickly became her main focus.

The two met while studying classical guitar performance at Rowan University. After their freshman year, they started dating. Following college, they spent several years teaching private lessons and working at different music schools.

In 2020, while visiting Kennett Square as Caroline’s parents considered moving to the area, Alex and Caroline quickly fell in love with the town. Between the historic charm, the walkable downtown, and the scenic back roads, Kennett felt like home. Soon after getting engaged, they made the move to Kennett Square.

Today, Pollock Music has grown into a thriving studio with four teachers and around 180 students. The school offers one-on-one lessons in guitar, piano, bass, banjo, mandolin, ukulele, violin, and voice. New students typically begin with a trial lesson before starting a structured monthly program. From the very first lessons, students learn fundamentals like tuning, reading music, and basic chords — often playing recognizable songs such as Yellow Submarine or Seven Nation Army. Alex and Caroline have even developed their own e-books and teaching materials to help guide students along the way.

The studio hosts two student showcases each year — one in December and another in June — giving students the opportunity to perform for family and friends. Their most recent recital featured more than 90 performers at a local church.

Beyond the studio, the Pollocks are deeply involved in the Kennett community. Pollock Music regularly sponsors local events and organizations, including Kennett Collaborative. Most recently, they served as the music stage sponsor at Kennett Winterfest, which featured an impressive lineup — including The Tisburys, one of WXPN’s “Artists to Watch.”

Alex & Caroline giving out candy on The Candy Trail 2025

Community connection is one of their favorite parts of owning a small business. One of their favorite events each year is handing out candy during Kennett Collaborative’s Candy Trail. And each Third Thursday, after they finish teaching their music lessons for the day, you’ll find them dining in the streets at La Tavola.

When they’re not teaching, Alex enjoys running, golfing, and cooking elaborate meals from scratch — even milling his own flour for pizza dough, pasta, and baked goods. Caroline loves arranging fingerstyle guitar pieces, transforming songs into intricate solo arrangements by weaving melody, harmony, and bass together.

You might also spot the Pollocks out and about in town. They enjoy grabbing coffee at Philter Coffee, walking across the street for Mexican food at La Michoacana Grill, or dining at The Naked Olive.

After three years in their current location, Pollock Music continues to grow while staying rooted in its original mission: helping students discover the joy of making music.

For those interested in getting started, Pollock Music is offering group classes on Saturdays throughout March — a perfect opportunity to learn to play guitar and become part of Kennett’s thriving music community.
