Riverwards General is a full-service interior design studio based in Kennett Square focused on creating highly personal spaces for both hospitality and residential clients—each one rooted in story, intention, and a sense of belonging. For founder Megan Helmuth, design starts well before materials are chosen or layouts are drawn. Every project begins with a clear understanding of the space and how it will be used.

“Our focus is on providing functional, purposeful interiors that are authentically yours, and aesthetically beautiful.” Megan said.

The Riverwards team is proud to showcase Megan’s thoughtful approach to design just two blocks away from their office in Kennett Square at the newly opened Francis Hotel & Suites, the boutique property on South Union Street. As Riverwards General’s first hotel project, it marks a meaningful milestone for the studio.

At The Francis, every detail was carefully considered, with art, historical references, and a subtle storyline woven into each room. Megan layered elements that reflect both story and history, creating spaces that feel intentional without being overdone. Supporting local makers was also a priority—custom window treatments were sourced through a trusted trade partner, while antiques and artwork were found nearby at Square Pear Fine Art Gallery, Clean Slate Goods, and Chadds Ford Antiques. The end result feels warm, grounded, and deeply connected to the community.

Megan’s path to launching Riverwards General in 2020 was shaped by years of curiosity and hands-on experience. She graduated from Unionville High School where she studied interior design and architecture, she spent weekends sketching floor plans and studying interiors, and went on to attend Thomas Jefferson University before building a career across several areas of the design industry.

The name “Riverwards General” is personal, too. It references the Riverwards neighborhood of Philadelphia, where Megan and Brian first lived together, and also nods to her great-grandfather’s general stores in upstate New York.

During COVID in April 2020, the couple came to stay with Megan’s family. “Kennett just sucked us right in,” Megan says. “We connected with incredible people so quickly—it became home.”

Today, the business runs as a family effort. Megan leads the creative direction, while Brian, who comes from a nonprofit operations background, handles the administrative and project management side.

While hospitality projects offer a broader stage, the studio brings the same level of care to its residential work, where the concept becomes much more personal.

“A home should feel like your brand,” Megan says. “It should reflect your lifestyle, your interests, and the way you actually live day-to-day.”

From new construction to single-room updates, the focus is always on creating spaces that are both functional and thoughtful. Whole-home renovations are a favorite, giving Megan the chance to preserve original character while adapting homes for modern living. Kitchens are another area Megan’s design skills shine, often diving into the small, everyday details of how clients use the space.

Just as important as the final result is the experience getting there. Riverwards General places a strong emphasis on guiding clients through each step, making what can feel overwhelming a lot more manageable.

“We’re there to walk alongside our clients,” she says. “Our job is not just to design a beautiful space, but to make the journey feel manageable—and even enjoyable.”

Projects typically start with an inquiry and an in-depth initial call, then move through concept and design phases before reaching construction, procurement, and installation. Whether it’s a consultation or full-service work, the goal stays the same: to create spaces that genuinely improve how people live.

Outside of the studio, the Helmuths are deeply rooted in the Kennett Square community. Megan is a regular at Talula’s Table for her oat milk chai latte and often stops by Café Emís with her daughter. A family favorite is Mezzaluna Pizza and date night often leads Megan and Brian to Sovana Bistro, or Braeloch. One of Megan and Brian’s favorite community events is The Holiday light Parade. Their family tradition consists of dinner at El Ranchero then watching the parade right outside after they eat.

At the end of the day, Riverwards General is about more than interiors. It’s about creating spaces that people connect with—places that feel good to be in and stay with you long after you leave.

“I love making an experience and telling a story that people get to absorb just by being in the space,” Megan says.
